Last night, we began our hunt for dinner at about 9:15 PM. Gautier recommended seafood. Of course, this being a Sunday night on Long Island, where dinner options are generally limited after 9 PM, we figured we'd just drop in at the old late-night standby, The Mediterranean Kitchen. However, as Marta and I pulled into the parking lot, we noticed the owner standing on the front porch, smoking a cigarette. When asked if the restaurant was still open, he replied, "We're closing up, but we have some hummus left, if you want it".
Gautier had originally thought that "the seafood place with a shark around the door," also known as the Atlantic Seafood Fish Market, over in Center Moriches, would be a good place for dinner. So we hustled down the Montauk Highway to try and sneak in before they closed. Upon arrival, all we could do was admire the shark around the door--the restaurant closes at 9 PM on Sundays, as, apparently, does our other late-night standby, Carlo's Pizza.
We cruised by Waldbaum's Fresh. Closed. We had to resort to our last option...Pathmark, where we picked up some seafood for Gautier, and some sandwich material for us.
So what was the rookie mistake, you ask? Waiting until 9 PM to find dinner on Long Island? Nah, that was just "pulling a Ryan." The mistake was not just going to Carlo's in the first place.
